BBC SO Totally Tanglewood: Chamber Music

Ruth Crawford Seeger

An intimate stop on the BBC SO’s journey through everything Tanglewood, featuring string quartets by American pioneers and Augusta Read Thomas’s percussive celebration of the Center’s spirit.

When Augusta Read Thomas was asked to write a piece for the opening of Tanglewood 2019, she set out to create music that would capture the ‘lively spirit, exquisite creativity, motion, enchantment and positive energy’ that the Music Center embodies. The result is Magic Box for percussion quartet and string quartet, performed here by students from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and Harvard University’s Fromm Players alongside a new work by George Lewis, Ruth Crawford Seeger’s landmark String Quartet of 1931 and Elliott Carter’s award-winning first quartet, a shifting dreamscape for four strings written amid the undisturbed quiet of the Arizona Desert.

The performance will finish at approximately 2.45pm. It includes a 20 minute interval.
