Gabriela Montero in Recital

Artist in Residence

Gabriela Montero

Venezuelan pianist and composer Gabriela Montero performs an assortment of piano pieces from and inspired by Spain.

From Soler and Albéniz to Granados, music by Spanish composers will form the focus of the performance. While not Spanish, Scarlatti was employed by the Spanish court and spent much of his life in Spain: two of his sonatas will feature. Chopin’s Bolero – inspired by the Spanish dance – and Liszt’s Rhapsodie Espagnole complete the programme.

Born in Venezuela and performing her first concerto at the age of eight, Montero has built a devoted following on the world stage, with New York Times critic Anthony Tommasini commenting that 'Montero’s playing had everything: crackling rhythmic brio, subtle shadings, steely power… soulful lyricism… unsentimental expressivity.' She is currently artist-in-residence at Milton Court.
