zone of interest

We are thrilled to welcome director Jonathan Glazer and producer James Wilson in conversation with Barbican Curator Alex Davidson after the film, to discuss this Academy Award nominated drama.

Commandant of Auschwitz concentration camp, Rudolf Höss (Christian Friedel) and his wife Hedwig (Sandra Hüller) strive to build a dream life for their family in their idyllic home in the countryside. Birds chirp and flowers bloom as Hedwig walks proudly through the garden, talking through what has been planted and which vegetables her children most enjoy eating. The banality of evil is here depicted in the everyday activities of the Höss family, with the horrors of Auschwitz looming just outside their walls.

An incredible cinematic achievement from director Glazer (Under the Skin, Sexy Beast) adapted from the 2014 novel of the same name by Martin Amiss. Glazer again collaborates with composer Mica Levi (Under the Skin), creating a thoroughly chilling work in which the banal becomes deeply unsettling.
