Mami Wata (12A)

Senior Community Screening

A woman looks pensive in traditional African dress, in a black and white image.

A harmonious and matriarchal ocean village comes under threat when spiritual beliefs and traditions come into question.

The people of Iyi have always looked to the West African deity, Mami Wata, for provision and protection. Guided by the matriarch Mama Efe (Rita Edochie) who acts as the Intermediary, the village lives in peace until challenged by outsiders who care not for the offerings of Mami Wata.

Said to be championing a new wave of Nigerian filmmaking, C.J “Fiery” Obasi’s third feature film presents as a futuristic fable which addresses inter-generational tensions and challenges us to think about the role of tradition in modern society.

With award winning cinematography (Sundance, FESPACO) from Lílis Soares, and an oceanic soundscape to match, Mami Wata hypnotises the audience and speaks to the power of family, faith and duty.
