The Wall (Deewaar) (12A)

Rewriting the Rules

A group of men in 1970s formal wear stand at a table.

A definitive work, Yash Chopra’s Deewaar is one of the most significant and influential mainstream socio-political films of its time.

It’s a classic tale of two brothers: Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan) becomes a powerful and morally ambiguous figure in the underworld, while Ravi (Shashi Kapoor) grows up to be an upright police officer.

A major box office hit in 1975, Deewaar was perhaps the high point of the ‘Angry young man’ films, and which in this case finds Vijay rise up from the streets, turning to crime in the Mumbai underbelly to achieve a dubious social mobility.

As Vijay, Amitabh Bachchan symbolized the collective angst of a generation frustrated with the socio-economic inequities of the time such as unemployment, social injustice and political oppression. Although released before the Emergency (1975-1977), the film resonated with the disillusionment in government and authority figures that were prevalent during this period.
