Tchaikovsky Symphony No 5

London Symphony Orchestra at Barbican Hall image

Ryan Wigglesworth conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony and the LSO’s own James Fountain plays the happiest of all trumpet concertos – raising the roof as well as lifting the spirits.

‘With desire and passion’ wrote Tchaikovsky over the notes of his Fifth Symphony, and he’s as good as his word: this is a symphony that positively blazes with melody, excitement and heartfelt, uncompromising emotion. But all music tells a storywhether it’s Nokuthula Ngwenyama’s message of intergalactic compassion, or a trumpet concerto that practically laughs out loud for sheer joy.

Change of conductor
Unfortunately Xian Zhang has contracted Covid, and has had to withdrawn from this performance. The LSO is very grateful to Ryan Wigglesworth for agreeing to step in to conduct the concert. The programme remains unchanged.

The end time for this concert will be added here closer to the performance date
