ECHO Rising Stars

ECHO Rising Star Cristina Gómez Godoy brings the oboe into the spotlight, showing off its unique timbre in a wide-ranging programme.

The rich, reedy sound of the oboe is best known from evocative solos in famous symphonic music, but tonight it comes to the front of the stage. Saint-Saëns wrote his wistful but virtuosic Oboe Sonata in the final year of his life to extend the instrument’s repertoire. Commissioned for the ECHO Rising Stars tour, Charlotte Bray’s expressive This Other Eden questions the nature of freedom. Mozart’s Kegelstatt Trio is too elegant to have been composed in a bowling alley, as legend has it, and it remains one of his most popular chamber pieces, here arranged for piano, oboe and viola.

Cristina is a recent ECHO Rising Star but has already been appointed principal oboist of Staatskapelle Berlin under Daniel Barenboim and worked with leading orchestras. She and her friends offer a rare chance to hear the oboe in both its solo and chamber glory.

This performance will finish at approximately 7.45pm, with no interval.
