A still of Elvis from the Baz Luhrmann film Elvis

Austin Butler gives a break-out performance as ‘The King’ Elvis Presley, in Baz Luhrmann’s extravagant biopic.

Taking us right through Elvis’s life, and by extension, modern US history, Luhrmann’s picture gives room to the important yet fraught relationship between Presley and his manager Colonel Tom Parker, played by a Tom Hanks having fun being cast against type.

Touching on religion, race, sexuality, the film looks at Elvis’ influences, legacy, and questions the power that Parker had over his protégé’s life. A great ensemble cast features Olivia De Jonge, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Kelvin Harrison Jr, Yola and Richard Roxborough, plus many more.

With a soundtrack including Doja Cat, Tame Impala, Stevie Nicks, Jazmine SullivanMåneskin and Kacey Musgraves, Luhrmann gives a 20th century icon some fresh musical treatment, as in Moulin Rouge and The Great Gatsby.
