Guildhall Jazz Orchestra with Jim McNeely

Jazz Orchestra dummer and bassists

Jim McNeely joins Scott Stroman to direct Guildhall Jazz Orchestra in a performance of McNeely’s Paul Klee Suite.

Originally written for the Swiss Jazz Orchestra and inspired by the paintings of Klee, the Paul Klee Suite stands for McNeely’s open-mindedness and receptiveness to a variety of art forms. This fascinating work also reveals some of Klee’s musical background, his own concern with polyphony and rhythm in his work.

Jim McNeely was born in Chicago. In 1975, having received a BMus in composition from the University of Illinois, he moved to New York City. 1981 saw the beginning of Jim’s four-year tenure as pianist/composer with the Stan Getz Quartet. From 1990 until 1995 he held the piano chair in the Phil Woods Quintet. At the present time, he leads his own tentet, his own trio, and he appears as soloist at concerts and festivals worldwide.
