Debussy’s La Mer closes a concert that pulses with feeling – whether Janáček’s explosive Taras Bulba, or Bartók’s hot-blooded love-letter of a First Violin Concerto, played by Isabelle Faust.
‘I have slandered the sea,’ said Debussy, after finishing La Mer, but posterity has disagreed, and Debussy’s controlled energy and ravishing colours surge through Bartók’s ardent youthful violin concerto, and Janáček’s thrillingly savage Taras Bulba.
Isabelle Faust is the soloist in the Bartók, and she’s also one of the supreme living interpreters of the lovely Poème by Debussy’s great friend and inspiration Ernest Chausson. It’ll make for an exquisite interlude between Taras Bulba – music that’s red in tooth and claw – and the rolling, rapturous seascape of La Mer; inspired by the art of Hokusai, but written, at least in part, at Eastbourne. LSO favourite Duncan Ward conducts.

Mobility
Spaces for wheelchair users in row U at the rear of the stalls (up to sixteen, depth of row 180cm) and the back row of the circle (four), both with fold-down companion seats. Some seats in row S of the stalls for people with very limited mobility.
Assistance dogs
Assistance dogs may be taken into the concert hall where there are a limited number of suitable seats in row G of the stalls. If you prefer, you may leave your dog with a member of the cloakroom staff during the performance.
Hearing facility
There is an induction loop in the concert hall. You can use this by adjusting your hearing aid to the ‘T’ setting.
