Tale of the Three Jewels (PG*) + ScreenTalk

Palestine Film Festival 2021

A young boy in love sets off on a magical quest in this drama set on the war-ravaged Gaza Strip.

Veteran director Michel Khleifi tells a tale of innocence, love and imagination set against a backdrop of conflict and occupation.

We follow 12-year-old Yusef, who looks for birds in the Gaza countryside to escape the chaos. One day, his hunt is interrupted by the beautiful Aida. Immediately smitten, Yusef declares his intention of making her his bride. However, she says he must first find the three jewels missing from a necklace brought from South America by her grandfather. Yusef must draw the plan to cross the sea to fulfill Aida's request and win her love.

Known to be the first feature ever filmed in the Gaza Strip, Khleifi affectively uses the grim backdrop as contrast for a whimsical story of romantic longing and the power of imagination.

After, we welcome director Michel Khleifi and Kaleem Hawa, poet and film writer, for a ScreenTalk.
