Chronic Youth 2021: Acasa, My Home (15*) + recorded ScreenTalk with director Radu Ciorniciuc

Cinema On Demand

A family sit in a row surrounded by a green field, with a city visible in the distance

After 25 years of living in the marsh of the Bucharest Delta, one family is forced to move to the city in Bucharest, where a whole new world awaits.

Radu Ciorniciuc’s heartfelt debut documentary follows the Enache children, who live at one with nature, fish for their food and even have their own free-roaming pig, in a wetland on the outskirts at Bucharest. However, they are forcefully ejected and confronted with a new life in the big city.

Filmed over four years, the film presents a compelling tale of family, gentrification and living with nature. This lyrical one-of-a-kind tale redefines our notions of a life worth living and opens up the obstacles Roma travellers face. The Enache family’s transition challenges us to re-evaluate our relationship with nature in an urbanised society.

After the film, Barbican Young Film Programmers Harry Kalfayan and Musanna Ahmed speak to director Radu Ciorniciuc in a recorded ScreenTalk, about making the film and the odyssey of the Enache family.
