Shostakovich’s ‘Babi Yar’ symphony is one of the most original and devastating masterpieces of 20th-century music. Gianandrea Noseda conducts it tonight
‘No monument stands over Babi Yar / A drop sheer as a coarse gravestone / I am afraid …’ Shostakovich speaks an uncompromising truth to power, in a symphony made up of death-haunted poems set to music that burns with rage and aches with sorrow.
Gianandrea Noseda directs the men of the London Symphony Chorus, as well as the Russian bass Alexander Vinogradov – ‘a rare find’, in the words of one critic. First, though, he joins Macedonian piano virtuoso Simon Trpčeski for a splash of sunlight, in Prokofiev’s sparkling and songful Third Concerto. And he puts down a marker for the future, with a new orchestral work by George Stevenson, a rising British star of the LSO’s Panufnik Composers Scheme.
The performance is expected to finish around 9pm, including a 20 minute interval.

Mobility
Spaces for wheelchair users in row U at the rear of the stalls (up to sixteen, depth of row 180cm) and the back row of the circle (four), both with fold-down companion seats. Some seats in row S of the stalls for people with very limited mobility.
Assistance dogs
Assistance dogs may be taken into the concert hall where there are a limited number of suitable seats in row G of the stalls. If you prefer, you may leave your dog with a member of the cloakroom staff during the performance.
Hearing facility
There is an induction loop in the concert hall. You can use this by adjusting your hearing aid to the ‘T’ setting.
