Sofia (15*) + ScreenTalk

Shubbak Festival

Sofia

Sofia’s unexpected pregnancy comes as a surprise to everyone including Sofia herself – but for a young woman out of wedlock, it requires urgent action: a father’s letter is needed to deliver the baby

Sofia quietly leads her family to an unmarked blue door on the other side of town, where a certain Omar is indignant, as confused as anyone by the assertion that he has to take responsibility for the child. Three layers of society are brought into frame against the colourful tiles of a traditional Moroccan home.

In sharpest focus here is class – dividing a family in their response, inviting a certain solidarity between cousins despite their differing situations, underlining the ever sliding scale of women’s rights. Money, it seems, enables choice, power, supersedes right and wrong – but it is not in everyone’s hands.

Meryem Benm'Barek’s accomplished first feature debuted at the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival, where she also won the Best Screenplay Award.
