Bagri Foundation London Indian Film Festival: Reason (15*) + ScreenTalk with Anand Patwardhan

Film, Power and Politics

Woman carrying blades in a procession

This unflinching political documentary from veteran documentarian Anand Patwardhan is an essential, urgent history lesson.

After decades of relatively peaceful secular democracy, contemporary India is a country now increasingly divided by religion, caste and power.

Patwardhan initially follows activists, rationalists and dissenters Narendra Dabholkar and Govind Pansare, then broadens his gaze to consider questions of communism and caste. The violence, ideological and otherwise, captured by Patwardhan isn't comfortable viewing but reflects India’s march towards the right and the country's increasing censorship.

A sobering film that will inform and frustrate in equal measure, Reason is perhaps the most important documentary to emerge from India in recent years.
