Heavy handed, we crush the moment

Dance, darkness and bass frequencies – Heavy handed, we crush the moment is an immersive experience, somewhere between a dreamscape, a meditation, a nightmare and a nightclub.

Over four evenings, Last Yearz Interesting Negro (the performance project of artist and dancer Jamila Johnson-Small) will present a series of genre-blurring happenings in the Pit, staging a new choreographic work that features performances by guest artists each night.

Focusing on the sensory impact of the live encounter for performers and audience alike, this work is an invitation to reflect on boundaries, intimacy, spectacle and the inevitability of movement. Last Yearz Interesting Negro and collaborators create a charged atmosphere through sound, light, set and live performance.

Working from the potential of dance as a radical social practice, this performance commission is a contemporary response to the Barbican exhibition Into the Night: Cabarets and Clubs in Modern Art.

Please be advised that this performance includes flashing lights, strobe, haze, and some elements of the set are made from latex. Acupuncture (which involves needles) will be used on the performers during the first 30 minutes of the performance. Some parts of the performances on Thursday and Saturday will also contain nudity.

The Pit

Location
The Pit is located on Level -2 within the main Barbican building and can be accessed via the stairs or lifts on Level G, next to the doors to the Lakeside Terrace.
