A Fantastic Woman (15)

Daniela Vega is spectacular in A Fantastic Woman

Sebastián Lelio (Gloria) directs a luminescent Daniela Vega in this deeply moving portrait of a woman trying to mourn her late partner.

Marina (Daniela Vega) is a young waitress and aspiring singer. Her partner, Orlando (Francisco Reyes) is 20 years older than her, and owns a printing company. Despite their differences in age and class, they have a deeply loving relationship.

When Orlando suffers a sudden fatal aneurysm, Marina is treated with suspicion. Marina is a trans woman. By virtue of her gender identity she is treated like a criminal, with everyone from the doctors and Orlando’s family to the police seeing not a grieving woman, but an aberration, a perversion.

Daniela Vega is revelatory in the central role, living up to her title. Director Sebastián Lelio (Gloria) has created an exquisitely compassionate portrait of the everyday obstacles of transgender existence.
