Parent and Baby Screening: Downsizing (15)

A still from Alexander Payne's Downsizing

Alexander Payne's off-kilter comedy stars Matt Damon and Kirsten Wiig as a couple who opt to downsize - literally - as they shrink to 5 inches tall.

Overpopulation is destroying the planet, but in Alexander Payne's (Sideways, The Descendants, Nebraska) world, scientists have found the solution: literal downsizing. The seemingly wild idea – who wants to be 5 inches tall? – catches on quickly, but not necessarily for the environmentally conscious reasons first laid out.

Two people that opt for a little life are Paul (Matt Damon) and his wife Audrey (Kristen Wiig). Overstretched and worn out by their current lives, they decide to start afresh. In their new downsized community, their modest assets become wild riches. In Leisureland Estates, Paul learns how to cut loose, befriending Dusan, his playboy neighbour, played with great zeal by Christoph Waltz

But a miniature world doesn't mean you're only left miniature problems, and Payne moves deftly between the dark comedy of his premise and a compassionate look at some of the less flattering aspects of human nature.
