Beethoven's Symphony No 9

Los Angeles Philharmonic/Dudamel

Gustavo Dudamel conducting the LA Phil

Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic end their 2018 Barbican residency with two very different hymns to joy.

141 years separate Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony; but both are works in which tradition is transformed and renewed. They’ll make for a gloriously uplifting collaboration between the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the London Symphony Chorus.

When the LA Philharmonic came to the Barbican in 2016, Gustavo Dudamel spoke of ‘a message of beauty, love and peace.’ ’It was a promise on which the orchestra delivered’, reported The Guardian. And it’s hard to imagine a team of performers better attuned to the optimism latent both in Beethoven’s final symphony and Bernstein’s all-embracing shout of praise.
