Hereditary (15)

Toni Collette is not having a good time in Hereditary

Ari Aster's masterful debut is deeply rooted in the horror classics of the '60s and '70s, building on them to offer a chilling vision of a familial breakdown.

When Ellen, the matriarch of the Graham family, passes away, her daughter Annie's (Toni Collette) family begins to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry. The more they discover, the more they find themselves trying to outrun the sinister fate they seem to have inherited.

Making his feature debut, writer-director Ari Aster unleashes a nightmare vision of a domestic breakdown.  Exhibiting the craft and precision of a nascent auteur, he transforms a familial tragedy into something ominous and deeply disquieting – pushing the horror movie into chilling new terrain.
