Bach's Cello Suites

Bach Weekend

Jean Guihen Queyras

A universe in a grain of sand: Jean-Guihen Queyras plays Johann Sebastian Bach’s suites for unaccompanied cello.

The Canadian virtuoso Jean-Guihen Queyras performs Bach’s unaccompanied cello suites – some of the most sophisticated and yet sublimely beautiful music ever created for a bow and four strings. There’s no nobler - or more pure - challenge for any cellist or their audience.

And yet, as with so much of Bach’s music, little is known about the reason why he created these flawless, comprehensive explorations of the cello’s potential. Queyras joins a long tradition of interpreters – though as The Guardian wrote of his superb recorded account of the Suites, “Queyras is always in command of what he does, and how he wants this elusive music to speak”.
