Manfred Honeck conducts Beethoven at his most relaxed, alongside Strauss’ valiant, heroic journey.

Warmth and serenity radiate from Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, the composer’s most lyrical orchestral work and one of the true greats of the violin repertoire. The piece is known for its virtuosity and grace, and for its best-loved movement, the finale, in which a lively and demanding solo part is balanced with a rich accompaniment, bringing the piece to a charming end. 

We turn from Beethoven to a work inspired by him. Strauss’ Ein Heldenleben (A Hero’s Life) was written in part as a response to Beethoven’s ‘Eroica’ Symphony. A quasi-autobiographical work, the piece contains over 30 quotations of Strauss’ greatest hits. Each richly romantic movement introduces a different aspect of the hero, from his cruel adversaries, to his beloved companion, dramatic moments of battle, works of peace and ultimate retirement from the world.
