LSO Artist Portrait: Antoine Tamestit

London Symphony Orchestra/Alan Gilbert

Alan Gilbert

Two moving, meaningful works to bring the LSO’s 2019/20 season at the Barbican to a close – the first work Antoine Tamestit performed with the Orchestra, and Tippett’s oratorio A Child of Our Time.

‘This is my special concerto,’ says Tamestit of the Walton, which marks the final instalment of his LSO Artist Portrait. ‘It’s very virtuosic and really understands the sound world, techniques and possibilities of the viola.’ The concerto was an immediate success for its composer, largely due to its abundance of brilliant melodies and elegant themes. ‘This young composer is a born genius’, exclaimed the Manchester Guardian.

Born out of Tippett’s dismay at events in Germany leading to World War II, A Child of Our Time deals with the experiences of oppressed people, and carries a strongly pacifist message of understanding and reconciliation. He places African-American Spirituals throughout, resulting in a work that still speaks profoundly and directly to audiences in continuing troubled times.

Duration to be confirmed closer to the event. It includes a 20 minute interval.
