The Rider (15)

The Rider

Masterful director Chloe Zhao breathes new life into the docu-drama genre with the delicate story of an injured rodeo star.

Once a rising star of the South Dakota rodeo circuit, Brady Blackburn (Brady Jandreau, loosely playing himself) is warned that his competition days are over a horse tramples his skill in a tragic riding accident.

Doctors tell Brady that he must give up the sport – his passion but also his life-life to his friends, and his way of supporting his sister with mental disabilities and his father who drinks, gambles and womanises played by Brady's real-life family Lily and Tim Jandreau).

Visually sumptuous, The Rider has already hailed as one of the best film of 2018. The sophomore feature from Chloe Zhao (Songs My Brothers Taught Me), an exciting young director from Beijing, tackles new territory: the attempt to redefine what it means to be a man in the heartland of America.
