Samona Olanipekun explores the concept of home, identity and belonging, taking his starting point from the theme of 'Globalisation'.

How does your film respond to this month’s theme - Globalisation?
When I saw the theme of ‘Globalisation’ a lot of different thoughts/ideas/feelings ran through my head, particularly around migration. The migration crisis over the last 10-20 years - my parent’s migration to the UK in the 80s and every other person throughout time who has taken the risk of leaving what they know and venturing into the unknown. The idea, the motivation and the courage it takes for one to migrate really fascinates me. I wanted to visually explore various protagonists on different stages of that collective journey. Hinting at the beginning, middle and open ending of this collective journey.

Can you explain the process behind the making of your film?
It took me a number of months to refine my idea into something feasible and loosely connecting. Once it was in a good place I started reaching out to various people I wanted to be involved. I really enjoyed the collaborative process it took to make Kindred. I welcomed questions and queries – the hows and whys. It’s always hard when someone picks apart or questions an idea of yours – but in the long term it always makes for a better idea. I had so much help and so many people lent me their ears and time. So yeah, in short – the process was very much a collaboration. It was ambitious but I’m really happy with the outcome.

Art – good or bad – will always encourage conversation and conversation is the starting point of change

Do you think art really can be a vehicle for change?

Art – good or bad – will always encourage conversation and conversation is the starting point of change. If we don’t talk about, act on and react to things going on around us then things will never change. The pressures of everyday life force us to create. I think creativity can be good for our sanity, so yeah I definitely believe art can be a vehicle for change – both directly and indirectly.
