Revenge (18)

Coralie Fargeat's Revenge

Left for dead by her boyfriend and his alpha-male friends in the remote desert, Jen rises like a phoenix to enact the bloodiest revenge possible.

The epitome of a 'blonde bombshell', Jen (Matilda Lutz), and her smarmy millionaire boyfriend Richard (Kevin Jassens) luxuriate in his paradisiacal desert mansion. Their weekend is interrupted when two of Richard’s friends arrive early for their annual hunting trip.

What first appear to be harmless flirtations from the new arrivals rapidly cascade into violent assault, and soon Jen is running for her life into the wilderness. Panoramic shots of the desert recall Mad Max, and the metamorphosis of Jen into a kick-ass warrior on the level of Uma Thurman in Kill Bill delivers a heroine for #MeToo era.

First-time director Coralie Fargeat has conjured a masterpiece so gruesome that paramedics had to attend to one audience member at its Toronto International Film Festival premiere. Yet the violence is poignant and purposeful, reversing the vengeance thriller genre dominated by male heroes, and creating a joyously gory and empowering take on the rape-revenge story-line.
