Kazakh Scary Tales

Kazakh master of cinema Adilkhan Yerzhanov returns with a thrilling horror story, as a policeman investigates grisly occurences at a rural maternity hospital.

In a remote village in Kazakhstan, a maternity ward is attacked by an apparently supernatural force. A sceptical cop is transferred to track down the culprit, but the local authorities are hostile and evasive. He teams up with a fortune teller and gradually they become enveloped in the region’s terrifying folklore.

Originally produced as the first three episodes of an anthology series, now presented as a feature film, Kazakh Scary Tales echoes the uncanny rural worlds of Twin Peaks and The Wicker Man

Chilling, atmospheric and genuinely scary, the film returns to some of Yerzhanov’s favourite themes – corruption, persecution of the outsider, and the courage of those who fight back against evil.

In Kazakh with English subtitles

Please note this film contains scenes that some viewers may find disturbing, including scenes of violence and references to miscarriage, abortion and abuse.
