Preview: American Fiction (15*) + ScreenTalk with director Cord Jefferson

New Release ScreenTalk

A man in a white shirt and glasses looks out over a parking lot, in front of white buildings.

Winner of the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, Jeffrey Wright stars in this hilarious comedy drama from director Cord Jefferson.

Thelonious 'Monk' Ellison (Wright) is a struggling Black novelist, continually flabbergasted by feedback from white editors, repeatedly asking for a ‘Black book’. He’s frustrated by the Black stories he sees routinely published, including one by Sintara Golden (Issa Rae) entitled We’s Lives in Da Ghetto.

Tired of reductive views of Blackness, Monk sets about writing a novel which parodies them. After being shocked to discover that there is interest in publishing the novel, he continues to be floored by the subsequent success amongst critics and audiences.

The film is not due for release in the UK until February 2024, so we are extremely excited to be able to stage this very early preview screening and have director Cord Jefferson in conversation with writer and actor Steve Toussaint after the film.
