When Stravinsky composed his ground-breaking ballet he didn’t just imagine a world of princesses, heroes and green-clawed demons: he let us hear it, too. Shostakovich’s First Violin Concerto evokes the shadows and sorrows of life under tyranny, and Sofia Gubaidulina tells the magical tale of a piece of chalk. Hearing is believing … 

Expect guest conductor Rafael Payare to revel in the deep sonic shadows and jewel-box colours, while the superb Norwegian violinist Vilde Frang probes deep beneath the surface of Shostakovich’s powerful musical meditation. ‘I need some challenges, some struggle’ she says. ‘Otherwise where would I find my expression?’
