London Symphony Orchestra/Marin Alsop

Half Six Fix: Beethoven Piano Concerto No 4

Eric Lu playing the piano

Half Six Fix is a 60-minute burst of music to kick-start your evening. Grab a drink and take your seat, as Marin Alsop introduces you to music that spans two centuries, and the Atlantic ocean.

When the Nazis seized power, German-born Kurt Weill had no choice but to reinvent himself as an American composer, and Lady in the Dark is a sumptuous, silken slice of Broadway glamour. Wind back 140 years and Ludwig van Beethoven imagined a piano concerto filled with a new kind of poetry: Eric Lu explores its beauties today.

Few young pianists have caused quite as much of a buzz as Lu, when he won the 2018 Leeds International Piano Competition. ‘A veritable poet of the keyboard’ was the Guardian’s verdict, but this handy early evening concert gives you a chance to hear for yourselves, as he joins Marin Alsop in music that embraces old worlds and new.

'The London Symphony Orchestra’s regular Half Six Fix is a quick shot rather than the full classical cocktail: one hour; one symphony; no messing around.' – inews
