Aris Quartett

ECHO Rising Stars

The Aris Quartett standing on a bridge holding their instruments

ECHO Rising Stars Aris Quartett perform two masterpieces alongside a new work that explores the neurology of music, showing off the emotional, dramatic and intellectual range of the string quartet.

Haydn was an innovator, constantly finding new sounds and ideas. His string quartets are full of thrills and surprises and Fifths draws us in with its conversations and contrasts, ranging from deep seriousness to utter silliness. Mendelssohn is usually known for his sunny disposition, but his Op 80 is deep and dark, a reflection on the death of his sister and his looming demise. We hear his irrepressible energy, but tempered with rage and passion.

The award-winning Aris Quartett, formed in 2009, captures all the characters of these timeless quartets. Their curiosity has led them to other genres including jazz, as well as new music. Misato Mochizuki’s »in-side« was commissioned for them by ECHO, exploring the way the brain accesses music and rhythm, perfectly complementing the fresh ideas of Haydn and Mendelssohn.

This performance will finish at approximately 2.15pm, with no interval
