BBC Symphony Orchestra/Stasevska & Sol Gabetta

Photo of Dalia Stasevska conducting

Dalia Stasevska conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra and cellist Sol Gabetta in Elgar’s Cello Concerto – the centrepiece of a concert powered by natural wonders and elemental emotions.

Sometimes a composer comes to embody the music of a nation, in a way that nobody could have predicted. It’s the autumnal melancholy of Elgar’s Cello Concerto that makes it so beloved, while Sibelius’s tempestuous First Symphony is as much a celebration of nature as a patriotic anthem: filled with luminous colours, and driven by spring storms.

One thing’s for certain, though: the BBC Symphony Orchestra’s Principal Guest Conductor Dalia Stasevska will drive straight to the heart of both pieces – and she’s the ideal partner for a cellist with the ‘blazing individuality’ (Daily Telegraph) of Sol Gabetta. First, though, an encounter with the extraordinary, shimmering musical world of Dai Fujikura, in a work that reimagines the orchestra as a microbiome. Small things can contain multitudes...

This performance will end at approximately 9.25pm, including a 20-minute interval.
