The Well-Tempered Clavier: Book 1

Jeremy Denk

Jeremy Denk piano

A set of preludes and fugues for keyboard, one in each key. It all sounds so rational, but in truth this is music of unparalleled imagination, fantasy, ingenuity and beauty from J S Bach.

‘For the profit and use of the studious musical young, and also for the special diversion of those who are already skillful in this study’ was how Bach described this collection. But for thinking-listener’s virtuoso Jeremy Denk, who 'approaches everything with questing intelligence and energy' (Guardian), it’s a playground for the intellect like no other, with boundless possibilities.

This performance will finish at approximately 10pm, including a 20-minute interval

Review

‘While touching on a vast range of moods, colors, and characteristics, Denk’s Bach across the length of the recital was unified by its richness of inner life.‘
