Balimaya Project + Colectiva

Jazz, West African and Latin music collide in this double bill performance from the Balimaya Project and Colectiva

The word ‘Balimaya’ comes from the Maninka languages of West Africa and means the essence of kinship – and the Balimaya Project is built on the foundation of forging musical and cultural ties from a place of integrity, authenticity and inspiration. The big band, formed in 2019 by percussionist Yahael Camara Onono, aims to bridge West African folkloric Mandé music together with Jazz and the sounds of Black London – creating an eclectic and exciting style that is soul stirring and steeped in rich traditions.

Colectiva explore the spaces between Afro-Latin music and jazz while reflecting on themes of sisterhood and female empowerment. Blending deep Latin groove, experimental textures, wild horn lines and thoughtful arrangements, Colectiva’s fresh compositions are rooted in the sounds of Africa, Latin America and the wider diaspora.
