EDI Progress Update February 2025 - July 2025

We’re working on becoming a more diverse and inclusive organisation, a place where everyone belongs, a place of fairness and equity, and to be an organisation that reflects the diversity of our community. In February 2023, we launched our EDI strategy and updates on our EDI work are published on this page, every six months.

Here is an overview of what we’ve worked on over the past six months, from February 2025 to July 2025:

  1. Inclusive Leadership and Line Management

Training for network leads
Co-chairs and sponsors of our five networks are currently undergoing a year-long leadership development programme to support them in delivering meaningful change as part of their roles.

  1. Empowered and Collaborative Teams

EDI forum
EDI Forum have met three times with discussions focused on reflections from anti-racism training, developing goals for our access and adjustments working groups and creating guidance on working with marginalised artists and collaborators.

Staff networks
Four of our five staff diversity networks (Women, Global Majority, Pride, Disability, and Parents/Carers/Guardians) have seen increases in membership. All five continue to be active and run regular support sessions, meetups and events. Activities over this period include an exhibition ‘Action Heroes: Inspirational Women of the Barbican’ and an all-staff breakfast during LGBTQ+ History Month. Barbican Disability group continue to support on Barbican Renewal plans.

  1. Data and Analytics

Staff survey action plans
Following the Barbican’s first staff survey in Autumn 2024 People Survey, all departments have developed tailored action plans, supported by EDI Business Partners. Each plan includes inclusion-specific goals, such as improving recruitment practices, increasing engagement with staff networks, and raising awareness of workplace adjustments.

Staff EDI data dashboard
Updates are underway to improve recruitment and leavers data visualisation and to track trends over time.

Audience dashboard
Now live and used to track key demographics. We were able to report baseline figures in our last report and will be able to report on annual changes in these figures from January 2026. We have started a project that aims to get all staff using the dashboard.

  1. A strategic approach to audiences

Visual Arts EDI checklist
Designed to be used by the Visual Arts team to maximise inclusion and mitigate exclusion risk at the earliest possible stages of the planning process. Will be rolled out in coming months.

New guidance
Guidance is being developed on working with artists and collaborators from marginalised communities.

Sector-wide approach
In partnership with other major cultural institutions including V&A and Tate, we’ve contributed to a sector-wide report on audience strategy, which is informing our future planning.

  1. Informing the People Agenda

Access and adjustments working group
Newly established group has been meeting regularly and progressing action through four subgroups: Physical, Technological, Attitudinal, and Audience. Highlights include mapping a more consistent access journey for visitors, developing practical guidance on reasonable adjustments for staff and improving visibility and communication of access work across the organisation

Mental health and wellbeing
Over 259 colleagues are now using the Headspace app, logging over 1,000 sessions per month. 42% of Barbican users actively engage in the ‘Managing Anxiety’ session. Our Mental Health First Aiders are being given more visibility, with a new intranet resource hub created.

  1. Learning and Development

Anti-racism training
Completed the first phase of training, with 448 staff participating. Notably, staff confidence in talking about race at work has increased from 30% to 92%, feelings of being informed about anti-racism has risen from 71% to 97% and nearly all (98%) of participants found the training useful to their team

Neurodiversity education
During Neurodiversity Celebration Week, we published an informative piece with resources about neurodiversity and neuro-inclusion.
