Behzod Abduraimov in recital

Behzod leaning on a piano happily

Behzod Abduraimov plays Rachmaninov’s Corelli Variations and Schumann’s Kreisleriana – a marvellously poetic showcase for this fast-rising pianist.

Abduraimov is one of those pianists who leaves critics grasping for superlatives, and when he played here in 2018, the Financial Times described a performance ‘full of panache, utterly unfazed by the work’s prodigious demands’. Tonight, though, he turns inwards: to Rachmaninov’s brooding variations, and Robert Schumann’s flights of poetic fancy.

And it’ll be fascinating to hear what he finds in them. ‘This young musician is evidently a seeker of substance and meaning beyond the surface of the works he is interpreting’ noted Bachtrack. There’s a compelling personality behind Abduraimov’s lightly-worn brilliance and effortless stage-presence – and if any one programme can show us where he’s heading as an artist, it’s this one.

End-time to be announced nearer the event.
