Annual Review 2021/2022

Welcome to our Annual Review 2021/22

Welcome to the Barbican's Annual Review for 2021/22. The full Annual Review video can be viewed above, and below is a video looking at the Barbican's programming highlights for the year.

The Barbican is London’s Creative Catalyst for arts, curiosity, and enterprise. Our Annual Report film for 2021/22 captures another extraordinary year, and we have been privileged to witness our work sparking creative possibilities and transformation for artists, audiences, and communities – inspiring, connecting and provoking debate.

Throughout 2021/22, we have been proud to put on thousands of outstanding performances, exhibitions, and memorable moments across the year - not least our 40th birthday weekend in March 2022 which we marked with an eclectic and vibrant programme of events, exhibitions, films, concerts, theatre and dance. This important milestone brilliantly showcased the breadth of creative work that is uniquely possible here. For 40 years we have been, and will continue to be, a home for artistic exchange and performance; as well as a venue for business events; a resource for local communities, and a springboard to inspire and support the artists and creatives of the future.

None of this would have been possible without the support of the City of London Corporation, our Board, Trustees, and the generosity of our partners, supporters and donors. Our thanks also go to our Resident Orchestra the London Symphony Orchestra, and our many artistic associates. Without this unique blend of support and community the Barbican would not be the place or organisation that it is.

We couldn’t look back on this year without mentioning the launch of our Barbican Renewal project, a major capital project that will not only bolster the building’s infrastructure to ensure the Centre is fit for purpose for generations to come, but also introduce new spaces that will offer unique opportunities for creative professionals to develop new work.

As we look to the next 40 years, our aim is to ensure that we continue to be a spotlight and a catalyst for the creative energy in London and beyond and, crucially, a place where everyone always feels welcome.

Final thanks must go to the Barbican Team without whom none of this would have been possible. The last two years have presented unprecedented challenges to the creative industries, and the Barbican has not been immune to those. Their passion and commitment to our audiences, our artists and our communities is something for which I am truly grateful.

Thank you.
