Steven Osborne in Recital

Schubert & Beethoven

Stephen Osborne standing in front of a rusted door looking pensively to the left

The revered Scottish pianist performs Schubert’s Sonata in B-flat major and Beethoven’s monumental Diabelli Variations, considered a seminal work in the piano literature.

The Diabelli Variations was the result of publisher and composer, Anton Diabelli, putting out a commission for leading composers in Vienna to write variations on a little waltz tune. Described by pianist Alfred Brendel as 'the greatest of all piano works', Beethoven’s response is a journey through 33 epic variations. ‘Who can do anything after Beethoven?’ wrote Franz Schubert after the composer’s death: he answered his own question in this remarkable, otherworldly final sonata.

Known for his insight and integrity, ‘a player in absolute service to the composer’ (Observer), Steven Osborne is a regular on stages worldwide, from the BBC Proms to Berlin and Lincoln Center, New York. In the New Year’s Honours 2022 he was appointed OBE for his Services to Music.

The concert will finish at approximately 9.30pm with a 20-minute interval.

Produced by the Barbican.
