London Symphony Orchestra: Half Six Fix – Mahler

with Sir Simon Rattle & Lucy Crowe

Sir Simon Rattle facing the audience in the Barbican concert hall

Kick-start your evening with a 60-minute Half Six Fix concert, showcasing Mahler's Fourth Symphony, introduced by the performers and with screens in the hall to bring you closer to the action.

Mahler’s Fourth, written at the turn of the 20th century, is one of his most accessible symphonies. It’s a masterpiece of contrasts – the sweeping opening movement gives way to the sinister dance of the second movement and a hymn-like, contemplative third. Symphony No 4’s heart, however, lies in its finale, a tender setting for soprano and orchestra of a poem painting a child’s glimpse of heaven.

Lucy Crowe’s radiant voice is perfect for the exquisite folk-inspired final movement, while Sir Simon Rattle brings with him a deep and decades-long passion for Mahler.

This performance will end at approximately 7.40pm, with no interval (timings subject to change).

Produced by the London Symphony Orchestra.
