Portrait of Aja Monet

aja monet, our Artist in Residence, presents a series of events including a live reading and Q&A, her album When The Poems Do What They Do in concert, and a workshop with Barbican Young Poets.

As part of her residency, the surrealist blues poet shares her poetry and practice in an intimate reading and conversation, with presenter Zakia Sewell, offering audiences an insight into her powerful work.

aja monet's concert sees her and special guests perform her debut album When The Poems Do What They Do a fusion of music and spoken word, weaving themes of Black resistance, love and joy into a night of collective experience.

Alongside these events, aja monet leads a workshop, exploring her politically engaged practice and approach to writing about ‘love’, open exclusively to Barbican Young Poets — a free programme for 16–29-year-olds invested in language – on the page, on the stage, and in the world.
