Sanrizuka - Heta Village + Introduction by Ricardo Matos Cabo (12)

Open City Documentary Festival 2025

Heta Village

One of the great films of Ogawa Productions, the culmination of a long cycle of documentaries on the conflicts at Sanrizuka in Japan, and a meditation on peasant life in the village.

This film chronicles the aftermath of the Sanrizuka Struggle that began in the 1960s in Japan, as a series of civil conflicts and riots between the Japanese government and farm workers, who opposed an airport development that was planned without consulting the local community.

The aftermath of the violent clashes resulted in deaths, injuries and arrests, leaving a deep scar on the people living in the fields. Seeking to find the roots of the ongoing resistance in the history, customs and traditions, and the people's relationship with the land, the filmmakers return to film village life.

Heta Village is a work of great patience and dedication, responding to the village and the tone of people's feelings. Ultimately, the film's power results from the filmmakers' deep empathy and solidarity with those with whom they lived and struggled.

With an introduction by Ricardo Matos Cabo.
