Relaxed Screening

Three women standing together

On its 30th anniversary, Todd Haynes’ drama invites reflection on the portrayal of disabled women in melodrama.

‘Suddenly, I find myself feeling sick…’

Carol White (Julianne Moore), a Los Angeles housewife, begins having serious allergic reactions to everyday chemicals, transforming the safety of her existence into a terror of everyday life. When she is diagnosed with an immunity disorder and sets off to New Mexico for treatment, Carol’s journey turns inward.

This first collaboration between Todd Haynes and Julianne Moore captures the quiet menace hidden in the ordinary, probing both the allure and the danger of retreating from the world.

This screening will have an extended introduction by Crip Melodrama curator, Emily Simmons, founder of Crip Cinema Archive

This film will be shown with on-screen descriptive subtitles, and optional audio description is available.

The extended introduction will have live captioning and BSL/English interpretation available.
