Prayers for A Hungry Ghost: Creating Theatrical Worlds

A visual language workshop for young creatives

Two women pose theatrically; one holds flowers above, the other draped in white fabric.

Step into the theatrical world of Prayers for a Hungry Ghost in this hands-on visual language workshop for curious creatives aged 16–25, exploring myth, mood and instinct.

Led by artist and stage designer Erin Guan, the session is designed to spark creative instincts and open up new ways of thinking about performance and design.

Using Erin’s multidisciplinary approach, participants will be guided through a simplified and playful process of stage design. Through myth, moodboards, colour and collage, the workshop explores how stories come alive on stage - and how instinct can shape a visual world.

Participants will respond to creative provocations related to Prayers for a Hungry Ghost, working both collaboratively and independently to imagine scenes, atmospheres, and visual motifs. Intuition leads the way, inviting participants to explore what design can do when it’s grounded in feeling. No prior experience needed - just curiosity and a willingness to explore.

About the production:
Prayers for a Hungry Ghost draws from horror and Chinese myths to explore the inevitably dehumanising consequences of the model minority trope, to forge a collective consciousness towards repair. Created by the award-winning company KISS WITNESS, the story is a family drama set in hell (the realm of the hungry ghosts), told by an ensemble cast, using text, physical performances and a powerful incorporation of live cinema that oscillate between ferocity, sardonic humour and tenderness.
