LSO Chamber Ensemble/François-Xavier Roth

Boulez 100

Conductor Francois-Xavier Roth conducting on the Barbican Hall Stage. He is wearing a dark suit with a tie.

Fanfares, massed cellos and electronics – a fascinating celebration of the music of Pierre Boulez, in his centenary year.

A concert all about conversations, numbers and musical echoes. A solo cello is in dialogue with six comrades in Messagesquisse where the rhythms are inspired by Morse code. Another group of six features in Dérive 1, while in Anthèmes 2 a violin generates its own electronic response.

Boulez surprised fellow conductor Georg Solti on his 80th birthday with a riotous Fanfare, ending with eight strikes on the woodblock – one for each decade. The early Sonatine is a playful, scampering conversation between flute and piano.

François-Xavier Roth, one of the world’s leading Boulez conductors, steers the LSO players expertly through this riveting journey.

The concert will finish at approximately 8.30pm.
