Boulez 100

Composer Pierre Boulez sitting down. He is wearing a dark jacket and has white hair.

Fanfares, massed cellos and electronics – a fascinating celebration of the music of Pierre Boulez, in his centenary year.

A concert all about conversations, numbers and musical echoes. A solo cello is in dialogue with six comrades in Messagesquisse where the rhythms are inspired by Morse code. Another group of six features in Dérive 1, while in Anthèmes 2 a violin generates its own electronic response.

Boulez surprised fellow conductor Georg Solti on his 80th birthday with a riotous Fanfare, ending with eight strikes on the woodblock – one for each decade. The early Sonatine is a playful, scampering conversation between flute and piano.

Change of Conductor
Conductor François-Xavier Roth has withdrawn from his engagements with the London Symphony Orchestra in the 2024/25 season. The LSO is grateful to Maxime Pascal for stepping in to conduct the Barbican and Milton Court concerts on 26 and 27 January. The programmes for these concerts will remain as originally planned.

The concert will finish at approximately 8.30pm.
