Preview: The Mastermind (12A)

BFI London Film Festival

Kelly Reichardt's stylish and comedic art-heist drama starring Josh O'Connor.

Director Kelly Reichardt (First Cow, Wendy and Lucy) collaborates with Josh O’Connor on this punchy period drama set in 1970s America.

JB appears to not have much to do in his suburban familial existence, whilst living a double life as an art-thief. In his next big heist, JB bites off more than he can chew.

This stylish drama situates itself richly in 70s suburbia, with keen-detailed set design and a stress-inducing jazz score. The film had its world premiere at the main competition of the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Palme d'Or.

O'Connor is joined onscreen by Alana Haim, Hope Davis, John Magaro and Gaby Hoffman. Cinematography by Christopher Blauvelt, who previously worked with Reichardt on First Cow, and also shot May, December, Mid90s, and recently Hot Milk.
