Good One (15)

India Donaldson's piercingly insightful debut tells the story of 17-year-old Sam on a three-day road trip with her Dad and his oldest friend.

A stunning portrayal of family dynamics, tensions and ties, Good One is a hauntingly human story set over a family hiking trip.

Sam's dad and his friend quickly settle into their old brotherly dynamic, airing long-held grievances; Sam, wise beyond her years, attempts to mediate. Tensions rise within the group in an all-too recognisable way.

A pitch-perfect coming of age, the film moves between humour and emotional gut punches; we see Sam experience her dad's emotional limitations and the all-too-familiar moment when parental bonds are tested.

The first feature from India Donaldson, the film screened at 2024 Sundance Film Festival and the Directors' Fortnight at Cannes, and won the Grand Jury Prize for Best American Independent Feature Film at the Champs-Élysées Film Festival.
