The Cinema of Qiu Miao-jin + ScreenTalk with Evans Chan (zoom) (15)

Experiments in Film

A woman sits on a bench in winter.

A memorial screening honouring Qiu Miao-jin, a trailblazer in Taiwanese queer literature and author of Notes of a Crocodile, marking 30 years since her untimely death.

Deeply influenced by cinema, Miao-jin wove film into her writing and quietly explored filmmaking herself. The program features Ghost Carnival (1991), a poignant story about identity and mortality, and The Love and Death of Montmartre (2019), a hybrid documentary reflecting on Miao-Jin’s impact on Taiwan’s LGBTQ+ culture.

Curator Eleanor Lu introduces the event, with a post-screening discussion led by filmmaker Evans Chan.

Programme:

Ghost Carnival, dir. Qiu Miao-jin and Lin Hsu Wen-er, (1991), 35 min, Taiwan

The Love and Death of Montmartre, dir. Evans Chan, (2019), 105 min, Hong Kong

With thanks to Evans Chan, Lin Hsu Wen-er, The Grayhawk Agency, and the Taiwan Film & Audiovisual Institute (TFAI).

Special thanks to Qiu Miao-jin’s family and Kaori Lai.

And extra special thanks to the curator of this screening, Eleanor Lu.
