Anthony Joseph: Rowing Up River to Get Our Names Back

Part of EFG London Jazz Festival

Image of Anthony Joseph in a hat against a red background

Poet and musician Anthony Joseph joins visionary producer David Okumu for an electrifying Afrofuturist journey blending funk, jazz and soul to reclaim lost names and celebrate Black musical heritage.

Inspired by the visionary tale The African Origins of UFOs, this powerful live project transforms storytelling into sound, exploring how music can reclaim lost names and restore forgotten histories. Moving through funk, dub, jazz, Afrobeat and soul, it traces the ever-evolving path of Black music with striking creativity.

An exceptional band of drummers, horn players and synth artists builds a rich immersive sound that connects past and present. Expect driving grooves, bold improvisation and deep political meaning in a performance that celebrates identity and looks to a new Afrofuturist horizon.

Age guidance: 5+. Under 14s must be accompanied by someone aged 16 or over.

This performance may contain haze and strobe effects.

Stage times for this event will be added closer to the date.
