Best-selling author and activist Andreas Malm leads a vital discussion on the climate crisis, exploring how we can act and come together with hope for change.

Scientists, tech giants and politicians are looking to technology for solutions to the impending collapse, including turning the heat down at a later date and technologies for removing CO2 from the air or blocking sunlight. This talk examines these promises of magical future redemption.

One of the leading voices on climate, Andreas Malm makes this address at a point of urgency as we rocket towards the tipping point, asking how we resist apathy and take action.

Marking the release of The Long Heat: Climate Politics When It's Too Late, Malm talks to environmental justice advocate and human rights lawyer Steven Donziger, mapping the frontlines of the struggle for a liveable planet and calling for the climate revolution that is long overdue. The event will be chaired by political economist and author Adrienne Buller.

Panellists

Andreas Malm teaches human ecology at Lund University, Sweden. He is the author of, among other books, Fossil Capital: The Rise of Steam Power and the Roots of Global Warming and How to Blow Up a Pipeline: Learning to Fight in a World on Fire.

Adrienne Buller is a political economist and author on climate, finance, and inequality. She is founder and host of The BREAK—DOWN, a platform on capitalism, nature, and climate, launched with Common Wealth. Her publications include The Value of a Whale - On the Illusions of Green Capitalism and Owning the Future - Power and Property in an Age of Crisis (with Mathew Lawrence).

Steven Donziger is an environmental justice advocate and human rights lawyer who helped Amazon communities in Ecuador win the largest environmental court judgment against a fossil fuel company in history. As a result, Chevron sued him for billions of dollars in New York using roughly 60 law firms and 2,000 lawyers, resulting in almost 1,000 days in detention at home and in prison. He currently serves on the independent committee of legal experts monitoring the landmark Energy Transfer v. Greenpeace court case in North Dakota, and is an outspoken advocate for Palestinian liberation, the rights of free speech and freedom of assembly, and the historic '“Stop Cop City” movement in Georgia.
